Al Presidente degli Stati Uniti Joe Biden

Oggetto: richiesta di archiviazione delle accuse rivolte a Julian Assange

Egregio Presidente Biden, oggi, noi rappresentanti della Confederazione Sindacale Sarda, di DonneAmbienteSardegna, di Sardegna Pulita e altre associazioni siamo qui, davanti all'Ambasciata statunitense a Roma, per rivolgerle un appello.

Siamo qui per chiederle di compiere, con l'autorità e i poteri che le sono riconosciuti, un atto di clemenza che restituisca la libertà al giornalista Julian Assange, rinchiuso nelle carceri londinesi in attesa di estradizione verso le carceri americane.

La richiesta di estradizione si lega a un atto d'incriminazione basato sulla legge statunitense sullo spionaggio, e mette sotto accusa il signor Assange per aver pubblicato documenti autentici di pubblico interesse. Tali pubblicazioni, rivelando crimini di guerra contro i civili - inaccettabili per chi aderisce alle convenzioni internazionali sui diritti umani - hanno svolto una funzione fondamentale nell'assicurare il diritto del pubblico a conoscere la verità e nel proteggere i diritti umani attraverso la segnalazione di gravissime violazioni di questi ultimi. Presidente Biden, Julian Assange ha solo esercitato il suo ruolo di giornalista. La libertà di stampa e di pensiero di cui lui si è avvalso è riconosciuta come elemento cardine della democrazia americana, ed è protetta addirittura dal primo emendamento della Costituzione stessa, oltre che dall'articolo 19 della Dichiarazione Universale dei Diritti dell'essere umano.

Presidente Biden, con questo nostro appello, non si vuole mettere in discussione la riservatezza ritenuta necessaria per certi documenti. Tuttavia, in qualità di Presidente degli Stati Uniti, rappresentante di tutti gli elettori, lei sa che, se la "riservatezza" serve a celare crimini di guerra, allora prevalgono il dovere del funzionario di denunciarli e il diritto del giornalista di renderli pubblici.

Presidente Biden, Julian Assange è parte integrante di quella stampa libera che è considerata essenziale per qualsiasi democrazia. Con la sua estradizione, sarebbero minati per sempre i principi fondamentali che sono alla base di una società libera e aperta. Convinti del fatto che le accuse a Julian Assange siano contrarie allo spirito della Costituzione americana, le chiediamo di archiviarle e restituire la libertà a un giornalista che ha servito fino in fondo il diritto alla conoscenza del pubblico e, dunque, la democrazia.

Letter for President Joe Biden, hand delivered to the U.S. Embassy in Rome on December 5, 2023.

Dear President Biden,

Today, we, representatives of the Sardinian Trade Union Confederation, DonneAmbienteSardegna, Sardegna Pulita and other associations, are here, in front of the US Embassy in Rome, to appeal to you. We are here to ask you to carry out, with the authority and powers granted to you, an act of clemency that will restore the freedom of the journalist Julian Assange, who is imprisoned in London jails awaiting extradition to American jails. The extradition request is linked to an indictment based on the US Espionage Act and indicts Mr Assange for publishing authentic documents of public interest. By revealing war crimes against civilians, unacceptable to those who adhere to international human rights conventions, these releases have served a vital function in ensuring the public's right to know the truth and in protecting human rights by exposing egregious human rights violations.

President Biden, Julian Assange was only exercising his role as a journalist. The freedom of the press and freedom of thought that he exercised is recognised as a cornerstone of American democracy. It is even protected by the First Amendment of the Constitution itself, as well as by Article 19 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

President Biden, with this appeal of ours, we do not wish to question the confidentiality deemed necessary for specific documents. However, as President of the United States, representing all voters, you know that if 'confidentiality' serves to conceal war crimes, then the official's duty to report them and the journalist's right to make them public prevail.

President Biden, Julian Assange is an integral part of the free press essential to democracy. With his extradition, the fundamental principles that underpin a free and open society would be undermined forever. Convinced that the charges against Julian Assange are contrary to the spirit of the US Constitution, we ask you to drop them and return freedom to a journalist who has served the public's right to knowledge and, therefore, democracy to the fullest.
